A New Year's Message

Well, 2014 was one hell of a year and I can’t say I’m sad to see it go.  Unfortunately, many of the issues of the past year continue into the new year- so be it; the fight goes on.
While we did get some contracts settled, we are still trying to get a first contract for Circuit Owners/ Engineers. We came close with the Millstone Organizing effort. Looks like we’ll wait and see what the new year holds on that front.

John's Statement at the Last Day for the CL&P Rate Case

John Fernandes was present at PURA today for the final day for arguments for the CL&P rate case. They allowed for a brief public comment. The following was read into the record by John:
Good morning, my name is John Fernandes, Business Manager of IBEW Local 457 in Berlin, CT.
I would like to briefly comment on the pre-filed testimony of Ken Bowes from June 9th.
Mr. Bowes states that the labor Unions would not agree to change work practices- the fact is we had just put an agreement in place that the Company chose not to honor.

Millstone Vote- Union Lost By 39 Votes

I want to thank everyone that helped out on this campaign; it’s been a long road. We had 36 days of hearings at the NLRB, many meetings, and several days standing out in the cold leafleting at the plant.  Dominion spent a tremendous amount of money to keep us out and in the end, even after the Board included many job titles that we felt were not appropriate for the production unit we sought, we fell short by only 39 votes.  If 20 no’s had been yes’s, it would have been the other way around- that’s close.

Sad news- Norman McPhail, one of our Charter Members, has passed away. Below is the link to his obituary.

2014 Union Picnic

Saturday was a beautiful day for our picnic. It was nice to see everyone turn out to enjoy it.  It’s funny, in talking to a number of retirees, one thing seemed consistent; they don’t know where they ever had the time to go to work. They all sound like they’re enjoying their retirement as well they should. Our former President Howard Edwards was there as usual. It’s incredible, that man never changes. Good for him.

Troubleshooter 3rd Step Grievance Results

Today we had a 3rd step grievance meeting on the Troubleshooter issue and in anticipation of no resolve, the Union and Company have requested dates from the Arbitrator.
