Meeting with IVP Carroll, 457, 420 & CL&P Management

Yesterday we met with CL&P management (apparently under the direction of Tom May) to discuss getting the contractors off Company property.  Present were Local 457, Local 420, IVP Frank Carroll and three members of his staff.  Like myself, IVP Carroll spoke to Tom May and everyone seems to acknowledge it’s in everyone’s best interest to have our workforce do the work.  Nothing came out of the day’s meeting; a lot of discussion, but no resolve.

CL&P Applies to Raise Rates; IBEW 457 Files as Intervener

As you may have seen in the news, CL&P filed for a rate increase on Friday. Hours later we filed to be an intervener in those proceedings (the same as we did over the building closures).

Workers Memorial Day and Safety

After participating in Workers Memorial Day I thought of all the people I know that have been hurt on the job.  Many of those injuries were minor, some more severe requiring hospitalization, and then there are the few friends that died on the job.  One of them, Frank Gasper, I considered a mentor.

John Fernandes' Letter to Tom May

Attached below is a two-page letter John Fernandes wrote to Tom May on behalf of the members of IBEW 457.

An Update From John Fernandes

We heard today through some ABA’s in the field that management held meetings yesterday where they now have some dates for Asplundh contractors to starting doing emergency work. At today’s Green Book safety meeting we asked for some details and their reply was that they wouldn’t have any information for us until next week. It’s incredible that they sent management to the districts to stir the pot yet provide us with no information.

Workers Memorial Day 2014

Workers Memorial Day is Monday, April 28th.  The Connecticut AFL-CIO will host a Workers Memorial Day Ceremony at 12:00 Noon on Monday, April 28th on the North Steps of the Capitol.  After the ceremony at the Capitol, we march to the Workers Memorial in Bushnell Park (next to the Soldiers and Sailors Monument) to lay wreathes and to read aloud the names of workers who passed away on the job.  IBEW Local 457 has been participating in this event for many years.
